A vision for our future

Nikon has turned 100, and to celebrate its successes and developments over past century, it is looking to the future. Sending 10 of its iconic cameras to 10 of New Zealand’s top photographers, Nikon asked the question, “What is your single hope for the future of New Zealand?”

Each week, photography fans can see the photographers’ answers on iamnewzealand.co.nz/iconic, exploring their vision, the camera they shot with, and the new Nikkor lens that was mounted to the F-mount camera they were assigned. Nikon cameras are unique in that all lenses are interchangeable, from the very first Nikon F camera in 1959 right through to the latest Nikkor lenses. The photographs will be shown at the Iconic Futures exhibition at Metro Gallery in early March, along with a silent auction on the website for one photo from each photographer involved.

Wedding and portrait shooter Richard Wong is one of those photographers. His answer to Nikon’s question is “harmony.” Focusing on celebrating our differences, Richard uses his photography to show that even things with conflicting natures can live together peacefully. Richard’s allocated camera, the Nikon F, was made more than 50 years before his Nikon AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.4D lens, but he describes them as “a perfect match”, and enjoyed the shooting experience afforded by a fully mechanical camera.
 

Photographers Chris McLennan, Harry Janssen, Esther Bunning, Troy Goodall, Jonathan Suckling, Mark Gee, Deb Clark, Lauren Wright, and Nisha Ravji will also picture their hopes for the future, each with their own Nikon model.

Nikon is seeking responses from the public to these photographic visions, with the 20 favourite submissions being put on display in central Wellington in March as part of an outdoor exhibition throughout the city.
