In D-Photo 92, on sale now, photographer Rouan Lucas van Ryn guides readers through considerations that must be made when picking photography gear for travel.
His exploits take him to the Tsaatan reindeer herders in Khuvsgul province in northern Mongolia, an exciting environment where getting amazing shots requires a shrewd approach to gear — from choosing the right equipment for the conditions, through to gear hacks to get the most out of what you have on you.

This image was shot while Rouan was a spectator at the village children’s reindeer races.
“On our second day in the village, our guide wrangles together the kids for a reindeer race. Each kid, starting about six, has their own reindeer and they ride around on them the way kids back home ride around on bikes.
“I get in position off to the side and set up for some panning shots, hoping to keep the reindeer sharp while motion-blurring the background. It turns out reindeer aren’t as fast as I expected. My best shots were while they were coming straight towards me, placing me right in the scene.”
