Gracing the cover of D-Photo 93 is Chinese photographer Liu Bolin, as both the photographer and hidden subject of our latest cover image.
Both a performing artist and photographer, Liu’s images feature intricately painted bodies — often the artist’s own, as on our cover — blending into the background of a scene. These images, beginning in 2005, were recently collected in the exhibition Camouflage, shown this year at Australia’s Ballarat International Foto Biennale.
In D-Photo 93, contributor and photographer Nick Servian has prepared a report on the goings-on at this prestigious gathering of international photographic work, including Liu’s fascinating work. Be sure to pick the issue up to hear what it’s like to be on the ground at one of the world’s foremost contemporary photography festivals, and explore the various galleries, cafes and public spots that transform the city for the duration of the show.
Below you can see some more of Liu’s intricately constructed images from the Camouflage exhibition, and be sure to pick up your copy of D-Photo 93 here.
