Emily Hlavac Green, once of Dunedin and now taking on New York City, tells us of her exciting, scary and successful move to work in the US photography market in D-Photo issue no. 95 (on sale now). To give you a taste of the beautiful imagery you’ll find in the magazine, Emily shares a recent shoot on the iconic Staten Island ferry:

Islands in the Sun

There’s something about that ferry gold. The way it mimics the setting sun, contrasts the blue green of the water. The wide windows and gridded wavy metal railings.

It makes me wonder where we are all going, where we are all from. Even the seagulls that perch for a ride on the railings have somewhere to go.

I’m an advocate for moving to make art; experiencing a familiar city like a stranger you just met, a place you can photograph in a new light. So on a recent summer Sunday I jumped on board the Staten Island ferry to make some new portraits with the wonderful Michelene, and to capture a snippet of life I saw on the 25 minute journey.
