International Spotlight: Carli Choi

To keep you in the know with what photographers are exploring around the world, we search the globe for interesting and inspiring photographers to feature in our International Spotlight series. This time around, we talk to New York–based Carli Choi.

D-Photo: Can you please give us a rundown of your photography: when you started, studied or self-taught?

Carli Choi: I started photographing in high school as a substitute for painting, and then I fell in love with photography, which I chose to go to college for. I went to an art school in San Francisco called San Francisco Art Institute [and studied for a] bachelor’s degree in photography, and have recently graduated [in 2015]. 

Can you explain a bit about yourself? Where are you located, are you a full-time photographer?

I’m a New York–based photographer. I’m working as a photo intern for a PR company, and have been trying to get more exhibitions lately for my career.

What sparked your interest in the photography realm?

I still remember as a little kid — maybe four years old — my very first dream that I ever had was to become a painter. Photography is a lot like painting. I love that you can create a whole different world in your photograph. You start with an empty canvas and start filling it in with your ideas and imaginations.

How would you describe your style of photography?

I photograph mostly at night. I think of the darkness of the night as a blank canvas and a flashlight as a brush. I give life to everything I shine the light on. It is fascinating each time to see how lights penetrate the darkness and change the whole landscape.

Can you outline what it is in your equipment kit at the moment, and what gear you are enjoying using?

I shoot with mostly 4×5 and 120 film. My favourite film camera of all time is the Contax 645, and I carry a strong flashlight that’s made in Germany, and sometimes a big spotlight.

What projects have you got on the go at the moment? What will you be working on in the future?

The night series, ‘Painting in the Dark’, is my ongoing series at the moment. I live in NYC now, but whenever I get a chance to be [amongst] nature I always keep my eye out for an idea and come back to a spot before dark.
